[Weather] Freezing day under sunny skies with dry air

But, instead of warming up, temperatures are taking a step backward, making it feel like we're heading straight back to the winter. It felt like minus 9 degrees on the way to work in Seoul. On top of that, dry air continues, raising concerns about wildfire risks. Strong, gusty winds in some regions could make conditions even more dangerous, so please be extra cautious with anything that could start a fire. Afternoon temperatures will be 1 to 3 degrees lower today, Seoul gets up to 1 degree, Daegu at 5 degrees. Feels like temperatures in central regions will be below freezing even in the afternoon. So you will need to bundle up but don't have to worry about fine dust affecting your outdoor plans. It stays much colder than norms this week under bright skies, before warmer days arrive next week. In addition, cold wave advisories have been issued in eastern parts of Gangwon-do Province and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. It will get colder tomorrow with the morning temperature in Seoul plunging to minus 5 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday and Wednesday it will drop even further to minus 7 degrees. The feels-like temperature will stay around minus 10 degrees. The weather will get colder with stronger cold waves this whole week. Please dress extra warm. But temperatures are taking a dip, and it's going to get chilly over the week. Meanwhile, the east coast is under dry weather alerts, Jeju and the west coast are under a strong wind advisory. Take extra precautions against wildfires. It will be windy in most regions, adding an extra chill. Afternoon highs could be 3 to 10 degrees lower than Sunday. Seoul gets up to 3 degrees Celsius, Daegu and Jeju at 7 degrees. Despite the cold, we should have plenty of sunshine, making for a bright and beautiful late winter. Let's jump right into today's highs. Gwangju also gets up to 10 degrees, Daegu and Busan will see a high of 12 degrees. It will be sunny to partly sunny in most parts, the east coast remains under a dry weather advisory. We are expecting decent air quality during the day but the capital and Chungcheong-do Provinces could see dusty air at night. Both Saturday and Sunday will bring mild and comfortable conditions. Yesterday, we were hit with a lot of snow and sleet across much of the country, it was a great day for snow lovers, but after all the snow we've had this winter, it kind of feels like we've had enough for the season. AND things are looking much brighter today. After a cold start, highs will go up much higher then highs in Seoul will hit 10 degrees Celsius tomorrow. But it looks to be a quite windy day today. A wind advisory has been issued along the east coast and Jeju, and the rest of the country will also feel strong winds. We're actually expecting temperatures to be about 2 to 5 degrees higher than yesterday, but feels like temperatures could be 3 to 4 degrees lower than what readings say here. Seoul gets up to 5 degrees, Busan at 10 degrees with good air quality expected nationwide. The cold has eased off a lot compared to a few days ago. Temperatures in most areas rose today with Seoul rising to 4 degrees Celsius. However, rain and snow has been falling across the country. Most of snow had stopped in the Seoul metropolitan area, while more rain and snow is expected in some areas. As for the amount of rain and snow to come, up to 8 centimeters of snow will fall in inland areas and the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do Province, 1 to 5 centimeters in northern Gyeonggi-do Province, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province today. Heavy snowfall warnings across S. Korea lifted; no fatalities reported in accidents caused by snow

The Interior Ministry has also lowered its alert level from "caution" to "attention." Central regions could see up to 8 centimeters of snowfall mainly in the morning, parts of Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do Provinces could see 3 to 8 centimeters of snow throughout the day. Southern provinces could see rain due to milder temperatures. Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do Provinces could see 30 to 40 millimeters of rainfall. It's Daeboreum today, when we can see the first full moon of the new year under the lunar calendar. The moon rises at 5:46 PM and should be at its brightest at 10:53. But checking out the full moon might not be easy due to cloudy skies. Meanwhile, highs in Seoul will be at 4 degrees, Busan at 12 degrees this afternoon. However, along with the rise in temperatures, the dust level could also go up high in most of the central regions either earlier in the day or tonight. Afternoon highs will reach around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius in most areas, a pleasant improvement from the bitter cold we've seen lately. But don't get too comfortable just yet. M3.1 earthquake struck Chungju city early Friday morning; no damage reported

Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring slightly above three on the Richter scale struck the central part of Korea in the wee hours of this Friday. Our Kim Jung-sil has more. Early Friday morning, around 2:35 AM, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck the central region of the country, waking people with the shake. The epicenter was located about 22 kilometers northwest of Chungju city, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The quake was felt in surrounding areas of Chungju, including Gangwon-do and parts of Gyeonggi-do Provinces. Initially, the Korea Meteorological Administration estimated the quake's magnitude at 4.2, but after further analysis, it was revised to 3.1. South Korea uses the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale to measure earthquake intensity, with 10 being the strongest. In this case, the highest tremor intensity reported in Chungju was level 5, or moderate intensity. "Level 5 means that nearly everyone in the area felt the shaking, with items like dishes and windows breaking, and unstable objects tipping over. Two aftershocks occurred by 8:30 AM, with smaller magnitudes." Experts also suggested further caution for those in the affected areas. "Although this earthquake is relatively small compared to those occurring in seismic hotspots, it may have caused strong shaking that could make some people feel uneasy. If you feel tremors, it is important to stay calm and prioritize protecting your head and body." The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has confirmed that there were no significant injuries or damages, with over 20 reports of 'shaking' as of Friday morning, the most coming from Gangwon-do with 15 reports. The Ministry has activated the emergency response system and issued an earthquake warning for the affected areas.
