[Sports Round-up] Team Korea reaches gold medal target of 11 after just two days of Winter Asian Games

2025/02/10 20:00

It's Monday which means it's time to take a look at what's been happening in the world of sports. For that, we have our sports editor Paul Neat joining us in the studio. Hello, Paul. Hello. Let's begin with Team Korea's medal exploits over the weekend at the Winter Asian Games in Harbin. The gold medal target has been reached already. Yes, Team Korea was able to match its overall gold medal target of 11 after just two days. Four came on Sunday and seven on Saturday. Three golds came in speed skating, six in short track speed skating, one in freestyle skiing, and one in snowboarding. There were also silver and bronze medals over the weekend -two each -in speed skating, four silver and three bronze in short track, one silver in curling, two silver in alpine skiing, as well as. two bronze in freestyle skiing, and two bronze in snowboarding. The very first medal was won in the mixed 2-thousand-meter relay short track with the team of Kim Gil-li, Park Ji-won, Choi Min-jeong, and Kim Tae-sung. More medals have been won today, as well. Kim Jun-ho won bronze in the men's 500-meter speed skating as well as silver in the men's team sprint event. Kang Dong-hun won bronze in the men's snowboard big air. You mentioned Choi Min-jeong. It's been a weekend of milestones for her. Yes, it has. She became the first triple gold medalist at this year's competition. And, the first South Korean female athlete to win at least three golds at a winter Asiad. Choi won gold in the 1-thousand-meter short track, 2-thousand-meter mixed relay, and the 500 meters. She has had a glittering career already, winning gold at two different Olympics and medals at three different Asian Games, not to mention multiple World Championships. All this after having a year off, so it's been an incredible comeback. And there's more on the way for her too as the ISU World Cup continues in Milan, Italy this Friday. Wrapping up the Asian Games for now, what other medals could Team Korea win? There's still the curling to come and snowboarding. Round robin matches began on Sunday and the medal rounds are slated for Friday. Before that, in snowboarding, Lee Chae-un is set to compete in his main event the halfpipe on Wednesday. He has one gold already from the men's slopestyle. Overall, with 11 gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze medals, South Korea sit in second place in the medal table. The Games conclude this Friday. And finally, to American Football. The Super Bowl took place on Sunday. What can you tell us about that? Well, the Philadelphia Eagles earned a huge win over the Kansas City Chiefs -40 to 22. The 59th edition of the Super Bowl saw these two teams meet on this grand occasion for the second time in three years. The Chiefs were looking for a three-peat but the Eagles avenged that loss from three years ago in emphatic fashion. In fact, at one point in Sunday's spectacle, the Eagles had a 34-zero lead and were up 24-zero at half time. It's their second Super Bowl win, the first came following the 2017 season. Alright, thanks for that wrap-up. See you next week. Thank you.

[Sports Round-up] Kim A-lim wins LPGA season opener

[Sports Round-up] Kim A-lim wins LPGA season opener

2025/02/03 20:00

Time now to take a look at what's been happening in the world of sports. Joining us in the studio is our sports editor Paul Neat. Hello, Paul. Hello. Let's start with golf and the season opener for LPGA. A great start to the year for Kim A-lim. Yes, a wire-to-wire win for Kim A-lim. On Sunday local time in Orlando, Florida, Kim won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions finishing at 20-under par 268, two strokes fewer than world number one Nelly Korda. Kim shot a five-under 67 in the final round and was the only player on the course to be in the 60s throughout the entire weekend. It was her third LPGA victory and she takes home 300-thousand U.S. dollars in prize money. Elsewhere, Ko Jin-young tied for 4th, Kim Hyo-joo tied for 10th, Ryu Hae-ran tied for 14th, and Amy Yang tied for 22nd. Moving on. The Asian Winter Games are just around the corner and South Korean short trackers have a specific target in mind. Yes, they are aiming for six gold medals. The short track team departed for Harbin in China on Sunday. At Incheon airport before departure, head coach Yoon Jae-myung told the media there that the aim is to win six golds or more as the team is in "decent form." The opening ceremony takes place on Friday with short track races scheduled for earlier in the day. The first five gold, though, will be awarded on Saturday so Team Korea might not have to wait too long to pick up the first few medals, particularly as there are Olympic medal and ISU World Cup winners in the squad -namely Choi Min-jeong, Shim Suk-hee, and Kim Gil-li. Fingers crossed. Moving on to football. Some important contributions from Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in over the weekend. Yes, both grabbed assists in wins for their teams. For Son, it came in a 2-0 win for Tottenham away to Brentford on Sunday. Son teed up Pape Matar Sarr three minutes from time for his eighth assist of the season. The win ended a run of four losses in a row in the league. Spurs are still only 10 points above the drop zone though. As for Lee Kang-in, his assist came in Paris Saint-Germain's win over Brest on Sunday. Lee set up Ousmane Dembele just after the hour mark to make it 3-1 in an eventual 5-2 win. It was his fourth league assist of the season to add to six goals in 20 appearances overall.PSG sit top, 10 points clear of Marseille. Alright, and finally, to baseball. A South Korean star has moved clubs in Major League Baseball. Yes, Kim Ha-seong has moved to the Tampa Bay Rays as a free agent. After leaving the San Diego Padres, Kim has signed a 29-million-dollar, two-year deal with the Rays. The gold glove winner will reportedly be the highest-paid player at the club. However, fans will have to wait to see him in action as he is still recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent in October. He'll therefore miss the season opener on March 28th and is expected back in May. Kim had been with the Padres since 2021. Alright, thanks for that Paul. See you next week. Thank you.

Baseball, football, golf, winter sports. We've got updates on all of these as it's time for the latest in the world of K-sports. For that, we're joined by our sportscaster Jason Lee in the studio. Jason hello! Q1-1) We are now less than two weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training for Major League Baseball and perhaps that was enough for the Tampa Bay Rays to fill a need by signing Kim Ha-Seong Yes, The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Kim Ha-Seong to a 2 year contract worth 29 million dollars. Now Kim also has an opt out after this year where he'll earn 13 million dollars so you could see the deal as more of a 13 million dollar 1 year deal with a player option for next year at 16 million dollars Q1-2) How likely is it, do you think, that Kim will exercise his option to become a free agent again after this season? That's a good question, and it's worth noting that Kim is still recovering from shoulder surgery this offseason and probably won't make his season debut until at least May. So he'll essentially have 4 months if that, to show teams that he's back to his gold glove level of play with some pop in his bat as well. The 13 million for basically just 4 months this year and then 16 million for next year is I think a fair contract for his services. To be honest, I'm a little bit surprised that it was the Rays that completed this deal with him as they're really not known to be a team that digs deep into their pockets to sign free agents. In fact, just the 13 million that they're guaranteeing Kim this year is the most they've guaranteed any free agent since 1999. So they obviously like Kim A LOT to have gotten this deal done. As for Kim remaining next year, it all depends on those 4 months and how he plays. If he can hit say.250 with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases while being among the top defensive short stops in the league, it's possible he could opt out of his contract especially if he doesn't enjoy the East Coast as much as most Asian players tend to prefer living on the West coast being closer to home and typically having larger Asian populations. Q3) Some more goals for Son Heung-Min last week as he scored a pair in the Europa League against German side TSG Hoffenheim, and in their latest game, Spurs defeated Sweden's Elfsborg. No goal from Son, but he had a great game I heard? That's right Son Heung-Min scored the 2nd and 3rd goals in this game to power Tottenham over TSG Hoffenheim in Europa League play. Both goals were scored off his left foot, continuing to show his ambidextrous skills. While Tottenham have struggled in the Premier League, they continue to excel in the Europa League. (will talk about Elfsborg game and how they are in the standings here as well) Q4) Yang Min-Hyeok made Tottenham's substitute roster a few times, but had yet to get into a Premier League game. I understand that he has been loaned to a 2nd tier team to get some playing time Yeah, and it's a team that I think a lot of Koreans are going to be familiar with. He's been loaned to the Queens Park Rangers for the rest of the current season which will wrap up at the start of May. Now Koreans might remember the Queens Park Rangers from the 2012-2013 season when Park Ji-Sung starred for them. They're in the middle of the pack right now at 13th, but just 6 points out of 6th place for a chance to get promoted back into the Premier League. Now, I know a lot of Yang Min-Hyeok fans are going to be disappointed to see him loaned to a lower level team, but honestly I think this is going to be a good move for him. Although he did make the substitute list it didn't appear that they had any immediate plans to play him. He's still only 18 years old that's 6 years younger than the league average so the reality is that he's still very green, but also has a lot of time ahead of him. Now he'll get plenty of playing time and probably with competition that is more appropriate to his level. So from a developmental standpoint I think this is much better than had he just been riding the bench or even only playing 5 or 10 minutes every 2nd week or something like that. It's perhaps disappointing that he's not an absolute freak and able to start playing significant minutes in one of the world's top leagues at the age of 18, but from a realistic standpoint this should actually have been expected and we'll keep a watch on how he does with his new team and what Tottenham decides to do with him in the summer. Q5) Let's swing over to golf. The 75th LPGA season has kicked off with Kim A-lim taking the lead in the opening round. There are five Koreans in the field to watch out for. What do you expect from this event as well as the entire 2025 LPGA season? Yes, there are 5 Korean nationals there are also 2 2nd generation Koreans participating in the 32 player field. Lydia Ko of New Zealand, who is a former World Number 1 and MinJee Lee of Australia join the likes of: Ryu Hae-Ran, Ko Jin-Young, Kim A-Lim, Amy Yang, and Kim Hyo-Joo. This is the LPGA's season opener and it features anyone who has won a tournament over the past 2 seasons on the LPGA tour so the number of participants does actually fluctuate year to year. The fact that there are only 5 Koreans this year is a little bit disappointing as the top end performance of Koreans on the tour has been down a bit compared to years past. Ryu Hae-Ran, Kim A-Lim and Amy Yang won a tournament each last year for a total of just 3 Korean LPGA victories last year, which is the fewest total wins dating back to 2011. For this tournament as well as the 2025 season I would say watch for Ryu Hae-Ran in particular. She won Rookie of the Year in 2023 at the age of 21 and won an event that year and then won an event again last year as well and is now ranked 7th in the world at just 23 years of age. I could see her breaking out this year with multiple wins, now that she's more comfortable. One more golfer I want to mention is Yoon Ina she's a rookie on the LPGA tour this year, but she's probably no stranger to Korean golf fans as she dominated the KLPGA last year by winning player of the year honours while also being the money leader and scoring champion she's already ranked 30th going into this season so she'll be one to watch for in the Rookie of the Year watch for this year and she'll make her debut next week. (Q6) And the Asian Winter Games are now just a week away from opening in Harbin, China. We talked a little about Cha Jun Hwan before. Who else should we be looking for when the games kick off? Yes, Korea has sent 149 total athletes, but they can't all win gold medals as there are only 64 total gold medals up for grabs. Korea's obviously favoured to win multiple gold medals in short track speed skating and the most famous skaters remain Choi Min-Jeong who is a triple Olympic gold medalist. If you want a name you might not have heard of just yet, but could become a household name very soon, remember the name Lee Chae-Un. In 2022, he was the youngest snowboarder to compete at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. In 2023 at the age of just 16, he won the halfpipe World Championship becoming the youngest ever champion of the event. We're talking about the sport that often produces the rock stars of the Winter Olympics with names like Shaun White and Chloe Kim and Lee Chae-Un looks like he's going to be the next one. If he wins the gold medal in Harbin this could raise his profile that much more going into the 2026 Winter Games at the ripe old age of 19! Remember you heard it here first! We'll make sure to keep an eye on Lee Chae-Un . Can't wait to root for the South Korean athletes at the event. Thank you Jason for those updates, see you next time. Thank you Bella, it was a short week on the Kulture Wave, we'll see you next week.

In other news. Korea hosts a special annual program that offers young foreigners with potential the chance to engage in winter sports that are not readily available in their own countries. Our Park Kun-woo covers this program. 17-year-old Fatima is a promising figure skater from Peru. She has faced many challenges due to the lack of ice rinks near home, except for a small facility that's often closed, making it difficult for her to practice regularly. But Gangwon-do Province where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were held has been providing opportunities for young people like Fatima for over 20 years with the support of related organizations through the "Dream Program." "If you have a smaller rink it's hard to train but here it's easier because the ice is better and the conditions are better. Coming here is really privileged. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to achieve but I think for now I want people to know that there is ice skating in Peru and to invite them to try it." With better conditions, young talents have been able to practice to their fullest, gliding, jumping, and spinning. "Every year, Gangwondo Province in South Korea runs the 'Dream Program,' bringing young athletes who lack proper facilities and coaching in their home countries to train in an ideal environment here. Let's see how hard these athletes are working to reach their goals." Professional coaches also helped participants train for short track, helping them give their best effort and skate at full speed. Ski slopes covered in heavy snow are also offering unique experiences for those seeing snow for the first time. "The snowing is very brilliant and very cool and this is the first time we come to snowing. So very interesting." "Very cool and very experienced winter season. Thank you so much. (I'm going to) get the Olympic ready Winter Olympic." Participants have steadily become used to the snow, to the point where they could tackle steep slopes on their own. And despite the heavy snowfall on the day, and falling during practice, they got back up right away. Since 2004, thousands of participants from around 100 countries, including Uganda and Uganda, have taken part in the program, with hundreds advancing to international sports competitions. This year, over 120 people from around 28 countries participated in the two-week program. These young talents will be returning to their homes next week, carrying with them the dreams of one-day becoming winter sports stars representing their countries. Kun-woo, I heard you visited the sport facilities in Gangwon-do Province yesterday. So, why exactly were you there? That's right. I had a chance to visit the annual "Dream Program," one of the legacy projects of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, taking place in Gangwon-do Province until January 19th. This program is well-known for giving young people from around the world the opportunity to experience winter sports, some for the first time. So why don't we first take a closer look. 17-year-old Fatima is a promising figure skater from Peru. She has faced many challenges due to the lack of ice rinks near home, except for a small facility that's often closed, making it difficult for her to practice regularly. But Gangwon-do Province where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were held has been providing opportunities for young people like Fatima for over 20 years with the support of related organizations through the "Dream Program." This year, over 120 people from around 28 countries participated in the two-week program. These young talents will be returning to their homes next week, carrying with them the dreams of one-day becoming winter sports stars representing their countries. Park Kun-woo, Arirang News, Pyeongchang. Kun-woo, I'm curious about the athletes that made it to international sports competitions. Can you tell us more about them? Of course. Among the hundreds that advanced to such competitions, around 20 made it to the Winter Olympics or Winter Paralympics so far. I had a chance to interview Julian Yee, the first Malaysian figure skater to compete in the Olympics and the winner of multiple international competitions who participated in the 2009 edition of the Dream Program. One fun fact about him is that he also participated in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Take a listen to him sharing his experience. "I thought that was like a huge stepping stone for me to just even realize and open my eyes to the world of winter sports. Always tell the participants to enjoy as much as they can, learn as much as they can from each other, from the coaches and most importantly to stay connected. It resonates with me a lot coming from Malaysia that we were not very developed and we made it this far." And especially as he participated as a special coach in this year's event, he said that his current dream is to help countries with less developed figure skating programs and produce athletes who can compete on the world stage. But Kun-woo, I've heard that climate change is changing the conditions for winter sports in Gangwon-do Province as well. How are they working on the issue? That's right Walter. Unfortunately, climate change is affecting South Korea as well, and ski resorts have been postponing their opening over the previous years. However, an official from the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation said they are working on creating indoor facilities where people can train while strengthening programs taking place at ice rinks, as they won't be affected by climate change. He also said training during the summer season is a possible option as well, saying that athletes in sports such as cross-country skiing and ski jumping can train even in summer. Alright Kun-woo, thanks for all of that. And we'll see you next time. Thank you Kun-woo. Of course, see you.
