[Weather] Spring cold sticks around today under sunny skies

The spring snow wonderland melted away fairly quickly yesterday but the spring cold is sticking around through today. This morning was off to an even colder start than yesterday! Many inland areas saw subzero temperatures with Daegwallyeong seeing a low near minus 20 degrees. Those in the east of Gangwon-do in particular need to be extra careful on icy roads and sidewalks. Despite the colder temperatures, the ultrafine dust level will remain high in the capital region, and Chungcheong-do and Gyeongsangnam-do Provinces during the morning. We will have plenty of sunshine with afternoon highs similar to yesterday, topping out at 7 degrees in Seoul, Daegu and Gwangju make it to 9 degrees. A strong wind will make it feel colder! But the cold spell will ease from tomorrow afternoon, with temperatures returning to seasonal norms. It will feel like mid-April over the weekend and into early next week under clear skies. As for snowfall, up to 20 centimeters or more is expected in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do Province and between 10 and 20 centimeters in the northeastern mountainous areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, with 1 to 10 centimeters in other areas until tonight. March snowfall brings S. Korea's latest-ever heavy snow advisory

A snow advisory was issued overnight as Seoul saw heavy snowfall a rare weather phenomenon in mid-March. Ahn Sung-jin reports. South Korea's spring seemed to have taken a hiatus. With unexpected heavy snowfall covering the country starting late Monday, Seoul issued its latest-ever heavy snow advisory since 1999 when statistics first started to be compiled. The advisory was lifted around 10 AM on Tuesday in most of the capital and surrounding areas. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy snow of more than 10cm was observed overnight across the metropolitan area area including Gyeonggi-do Province as well as parts in Gangwon-do and Chungcheong-do provinces up to Tuesday morning. Following the heavy snowfall, Seoul's lowest temperature also dropped to zero but the feels-like temperature fell to sub-zero numbers. It's not common to see this much snow in March. The KMA noted that a low-pressure system formed by Arctic winds caused much of the heavy snow and strong gales. The unprecedented snow caused travel disruptions and safety concerns with one subway line stopping services in the early hours of Tuesday, and more than 8 flights and around 90 passenger ships having their departures canceled or delayed. In the early hours of Tuesday, a driver died in a car crash, with police pointing to a slippery road from the snow as the cause. Though most of the snowfall is expected to stop by the end of the day, strong winds are expected to continue. East of Gangwon-do could see 40 centimeters or more, mountainous regions in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province may see up to 20 centimeters, with blizzards. Heavy snow alerts in place for most regions. Strong winds will also be an issue, especially on Jeju Island and western regions, with wind advisories in place. Temperatures remain on the chilly side throughout the day, highs will be similar to yesterday topping out at 7 degrees in the capital, Busan at 8 degrees. On the bright side, warmer days are ahead! Starting Thursday, we'll see a sharp turnaround as a warming trend takes over. Sunny skies return, and temperatures will climb, melting away today's snow fairly quickly. Latest-ever heavy snow advisory issued for Seoul as S. Korea experiences mid-March snowfall

South Korea is experiencing an unusual spring chill, resulting in heavy mid-March snow. Our Lee Soo-jin has this report. As winter makes an unexpected return to South Korea, Seoul has been issued its latest-ever heavy snow advisory. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, over 10 cm of snow accumulated in the northern part of the capital between 8 PM on Monday and 6 AM on Tuesday. In the county of Cheorwon in Gangwon-do Province, 14 cm of snow accumulated over the same period, while significant snowfall of more than 10 cm of snow was also recorded in cities in Gyeonggi-do Province. Heavy snow advisories, which are issued for a region when at least 5 cm of snow is expected to accumulate over a period of 24 hours, were issued for the Seoul metropolitan area as well as in parts of Chungcheong-do Provinces, Jeolla-do Provinces, Gyeongsang-do Provinces, and Jeju Island. And a heavy snow warning, issued when snowfall is expected to exceed 20 cm within the same period, was issued for Gangwon-do Province. For Seoul, this marks the latest-ever heavy snow advisory issued, surpassing the previous record set on March 9, 2010. This year's unusual mid-March snowfall was caused by an Arctic vortex, a large, rotating mass of cold air, bringing Arctic cold air with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius into the country. With heavy snow advisories issued nationwide,.. the Interior Ministry activated a Level One Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters emergency response posture and raised the nation's crisis alert level for heavy snow from the lowest level, "attention," to "caution." But the heavy snowfall has already resulted in accidents. Around 12:50 AM today, in the city of Ansan in Gyeonggi Province, a car skidded on a snowy road and collided with a median barrier, killing the driver while other vehicles were damaged by debris. While the snow and rain falling nationwide are expected to gradually ease by the afternoon, to prevent further accidents, local governments are deploying automatic deicing equipment and personnel to clear roads. Expect a pleasant spring day across Korea. Especially those of us in the west will have mid-April-like temperatures with highs surpassing 20 degrees in Gwangju. The best part? Magnitude 4.4 earthquake, strongest in 40 years, hits Naples, Italy

In Italy, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck a region near Naples in the early hours of Thursday local time with at least 11 people treated for minor injuries. The quake's epicenter was near the coastal town of Pozzuoli, west of Naples, occurring around 1:25 A.M. The earthquake caused minor structural damage, including cracks in buildings and the collapse of facades. This was the strongest tremor in the area in 40 years. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Amazing to notice what mother nature is capable of, it was only couple of weeks ago we were holding on to winter jackets but yesterday's afternoon warmth made it feel like hotter weather was just around the corner. As for today, highs will go down more than 5 degrees in the capital and the rest of the upper regions. There will be afternoon spotty rain in the upper regions and Jeju. The amount won't be much but those of us in the capital area will be trapped in high levels of fine dust again so make sure to keep an umbrella handy to avoid dusty rain. Stagnant air flow is the main cause of dusty air this morning, plus yellow dust will blow into the entire country affecting western regions first as early as this afternoon. Tomorrow will be dustier.
