2025/02/11 17:00
During the day today, the temperatures recovered back to normal levels rising to 6 degrees Celsius in Seoul. All of the cold wave warnings have been lifted as well. However, as the cold recedes, it's being replaced by uninvited dust. The Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon-do Province, and the Chungcheong-do provinces will see "bad" levels of ultra-fine dust on Wednesday. Rain will begin tonight on the west coast of Jeollanam-do Province and Jeju Island. Rain and snow are forecast all over the country tomorrow. Especially, it will snow strongly from dawn into tomorrow morning. Please be careful on the slippery roads on the way to work. Seoul will start off at zero degrees tomorrow morning, and Daejeon and Daegu at minus 1 degree. Daytime temperatures will move up to 4 degrees in Seoul and Chuncheon. In central parts of the country, you will be able to see the full moon of Jeongwoldaeboreum through the clouds. That's all for Korea. Here are the weather conditions around the world.
[Weather] Cold snap eases, dusty in west central regions
2025/02/11 10:00
After days of freezing temperatures, the cold snap is finally easing across Korea today. Under bright skies, we're in for a much more bearable afternoon, making it a great day to step outside. However, along with the rise in temperatures, the dust level could also go up high in most of the central regions either earlier in the day or tonight. Afternoon highs will reach around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius in most areas, a pleasant improvement from the bitter cold we've seen lately. But don't get too comfortable just yet. Another round of snow is on the way for tomorrow, west of central regions could see up to 8 centimeters of snow. The west of Gangwon-do could see 10 centimeters of heavy snow. So checking on the first full moon of the new year tomorrow because it is Jeongwol Daeboreum, might not be as clear as we wish it could be. Meanwhile, despite a shift to milder weather in the coming days, it's not quite time to put away your winter coats just yet.

M3.1 earthquake struck Chungju city early Friday morning; no damage reported
2025/02/07 20:00
Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring slightly above three on the Richter scale struck the central part of Korea in the wee hours of this Friday. Our Kim Jung-sil has more. Early Friday morning, around 2:35 AM, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck the central region of the country, waking people with the shake. The epicenter was located about 22 kilometers northwest of Chungju city, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The quake was felt in surrounding areas of Chungju, including Gangwon-do and parts of Gyeonggi-do Provinces. Initially, the Korea Meteorological Administration estimated the quake's magnitude at 4.2, but after further analysis, it was revised to 3.1. South Korea uses the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale to measure earthquake intensity, with 10 being the strongest. In this case, the highest tremor intensity reported in Chungju was level 5, or moderate intensity. "Level 5 means that nearly everyone in the area felt the shaking, with items like dishes and windows breaking, and unstable objects tipping over. Two aftershocks occurred by 8:30 AM, with smaller magnitudes." Experts also suggested further caution for those in the affected areas. "Although this earthquake is relatively small compared to those occurring in seismic hotspots, it may have caused strong shaking that could make some people feel uneasy. If you feel tremors, it is important to stay calm and prioritize protecting your head and body." The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has confirmed that there were no significant injuries or damages, with over 20 reports of 'shaking' as of Friday morning, the most coming from Gangwon-do with 15 reports. The Ministry has activated the emergency response system and issued an earthquake warning for the affected areas. It has also dispatched a field situation manager to Chungju to oversee the situation and ensure proper management. Kim Jung-sil, Arirang News.
[Weather] Cold wave alerts continue in most places with more snow in west coast regions
2025/02/10 10:00
This winter could be remembered as one of the warmest if last week's cold snap wasn't too bad. Hangang River was frozen on Saturday, the second latest that has happened since the record began back in 1906. It's another freezing morning for many of us with cold wave alerts in place. However, we could expect to see an improvement in conditions from this afternoon. West coast regions could see 1 to 5 centimeters of snowfall through this morning with a heavy snow advisory in place for parts of Jeollabuk-do Province. Drive with care. The rest of the country will be under mostly sunny skies, with a high of 2 degrees Celsius in the capital, 5 degrees in Daegu. Windy air could bring down the feels-like temperatures in most places. Stay bundled up. The cold air that had a firm hold on the country should finally ease this week, and we could see more seasonable temperatures return. However, another round of wintry precipitation is in the forecast for Wednesday in most parts of Korea.
