Good morning, I'm Choi Chi-hee, and this is The World Now.

A devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday has killed more than 800 people.

According to Taliban officials on Monday, at least 812 people were killed, and 2,800 others were injured in Afghanistan's deadliest earthquake in a decade, which struck just before midnight on Sunday.

The quake's epicenter was located just east of Jalalabad, causing heavy damage in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

Rescue and relief efforts are facing challenges due to disrupted communications and significant damage from landslides.

Helicopters and military units have been deployed, but many survivors remain trapped.

Authorities have warned that the death toll is likely to rise.

This disaster comes as Afghanistan is already grappling with a severe drought, aid cuts, and what the World Food Program describes as an unprecedented hunger crisis.
