President Trump lifts most U.S. sanctions on Syria for first time in 21 years

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order lifting sanctions against Syria that were imposed over time starting back in 2004.

They included export controls on certain goods and restrictions on foreign assistance to Syria.

However sanctions against former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and his associates remain in place.

The order takes effect from today that is July first.
