The European Commission has put forward a legally binding plan to phase out Russian gas and LNG imports by the end of 2027, aiming to formally end the EU's energy dependence on Moscow.
Under the proposal on Tuesday, no new gas or LNG contracts may be signed after January 1, 2026; short-term contracts concluded before June 17, 2025 must end by June 17 next year; and all existing long-term contracts will be terminated by January 1, 2028.
LNG terminals will also stop servicing Russian clients on a similar timetable.
The proposed ban is structured in accordance with EU trade and energy laws, allowing for its adoption with a qualified majority and bypassing vetoes from Hungary and Slovakia.
