South Korean conductor Chung Myung-whun has been appointed as the new music director of Italy's Teatro alla Scala.
According to the Associated Press on Monday, the 72-year-old becomes the first Asian to be given the role at the famed opera house in Milan.
He will succeed Riccardo Chailly at the end of next year, and will remain as the music director until February 2030.
A famed pianist, Chung has been a conductor for a number of renowned orchestras, including the Tokyo Philharmonics.
