The International Court of Justice in The Hague began hearings on Monday to assess Israel's legal responsibilities concerning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, following the blockade of aid and the cutting of ties with a UN relief agency for Palestinians.

A United Nations General Assembly request initiated the proceedings to determine whether Israel is violating international law by restricting aid to the Palestinian territories.

The ICJ's week-long series of public hearings will focus on Israel's obligations to facilitate humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank.

Over 40 countries and international organizations are expected to present arguments during the hearings.
