U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is visiting Russia this week for talks with President Vladimir Putin about ending Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The upcoming meeting will mark the fourth between the two in recent times aimed at advancing a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv.
Separately officials from the U.S. U.K. France Germany and Ukraine are set to sit down in London on Wednesday for similar talks.
As part of efforts to halt the hostilities some sources say the U.S. may suggest formal recognition of Russia's annexation of Crimea a suggestion that Ukraine has already rejected.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday emphasized that he was willing to talk with Russia but would reject recognition of Russia's occupation of Crimea.
