South Korea's current account balance last year more than tripled compared to the year before on the back of booming exports.

Data from the Bank of Korea on Thursday showed that the country's overall current account balance in December was the highest any month of December on record ending the year with a current account balance surplus of 99-point-0-4 billion dollars.

This surpasses earlier estimates by the central bank, driven mainly by an increase in exports.

Exports rose by more than eight percent year-on-year, spurred by a jump in outbound semiconductor shipments.
