Seoul and Washington's national security advisors Shin Won-sik and Michael Waltz held their first phone call on Wednesday night, agreeing to meet at the earliest possible date in person in Washington.

This follows Waltz's appointment as the first top security official of the second Trump Administration.

According to Seoul's top office, the two exchanged views on bilateral relations, North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, and trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.

They also discussed cooperation on regional and global issues.

Shin congratulated Waltz on his appointment and expressed confidence that the South Korea-U.S. alliance will continue to strengthen under the Trump administration.

The U.S. official also said he expects the two countries would further expand their cooperation across a range of fields.
